UM SRH Vending Machines To Offer More Healthy Choices

If you avert your eyes when passing vending machines so as to avoid the temptations of Fritos, Doritos and Kit Kat Bars, it will soon be safer to slow down and take a look!

Daniels Vending (which provides vending machines at UM Shore Medical Centers at Easton and Dorchester and the Cancer Center, the Canvasback, Shore Medical Pavilions at Easton and Queenstown, and Shore Emergency Center in Queenstown) and Canteen Vending (which provides vending machines at UM Shore Medical Center at Chestertown) are now planning changes to the snack/drink selection in the machines so that half of the items will be more on the healthy side.
The changes should take place in about two weeks, and in the Daniels machines, there will be more items meeting the company’s “Fit Pick” criteria, which are: less than 35 percent fat, less that 10 percent saturated fat, and less than 35 percent of total weight from sugar. New selections in all the machines should be available within the next few weeks.
Healthy Snacks, Healthy Vending, Low Sugar, Low Fat
“This is an important step made by UM Shore Regional Health to help team members, volunteers, patients and visitors have access to healthier choices for snacks,” says Nancy Bedell, regional director, Employee Health & Wellness Services. “Whether you are a staff member too busy to break for a healthy meal or a patient or visitor waiting for an appointment or a procedure, you will have some better choices for to satisfy that snack craving.”
