Congratulations to Cathy Weber, BSN, RN, CEN, Emergency Department manager at UM Shore Medical Center at Dorchester, on being named Emergency Nurse of the Year by the American College of Emergency Physicians, Maryland Chapter (MD ACEP). The award, presented by William Jaquis, MD FAECP, on April 8 at the Maryland ACEP conference in Baltimore, recognized Weber as a “leader who serves to motivate, inspire and challenge her team while promoting others to maximize their strengths and look at weaknesses as opportunities to grow.”
At  the award presentation, Weber was introduced by Mary Alice Vanhoy, manager, UM Shore Emergency Center at Queenstown and EMS nurse coordinator, UM Shore Medical Centers at Easton and Dorchester.
Weber served as the sole emergency nurse when the Emergency Department at UM SMC at Dorchester was opened and has remained there for more than three decades, now serving as nurse manager for the department. She also is a longstanding member of the Eastern Shore Chapter of Emergency Nurses Association (ENA), having serving in multiple offices of the organization and as an active member of the ENA Leadership Special Interest Group.
MD ACEP reaches out to the leadership of the Maryland Emergency Nurses Association each year to select the MD ACEP Nurse of the Year.  Weber’s nomination was submitted to the MD ENA by her nursing colleagues, Renee Edsall and Ashely Baynard, who had gathered input from many members of the nursing and medical staffs at UM Shore Emergency Center at Dorchester.
In their nomination, Edsall and Baynard noted that Weber has promoted professional and personal development for her colleagues, advanced the practice of emergency nursing at the hospital, and facilitated multiple renovations and enhancements to the department, including the incorporation of new technologies. “Cathy is the face of emergency nursing in Dorchester County and we cannot think of anyone more worthy of this award,” they wrote.
