Access-to-Care
SSlogoThe Safe Sitter® course for ’tweens and teens will be offered at University of Maryland Shore Medical Centers at Chestertown and Easton this month. The Chestertown class is set for Saturday, January 16, 9 a.m.-4:30 p.m. in the hospital’s Education Center, and the Easton class will take place the following Saturday, January 23, 9 a.m.–4:30 p.m., in the hospital’s Nick Rajacich Education Center Rooms A-B
According to the National Safe Sitter organization, more than 600,000 adolescent babysitters nationwide have graduated from this program, which instills students with confidence as they learn how, why and where household injuries or other emergencies might happen so they can be prevented.
Safe Sitter® classes are taught by hospital nurses with pediatric experience. The curriculum includes hands-on practice in lifesaving techniques for use during an emergency, and also instruction in first-aid (including infant and child choking rescue), age-appropriate care strategies, how to prevent and manage problem behavior, and how to run a babysitting business.
Preregistration is required due to limited seating. The registration fee for the Safe Sitter® class is $40 per student, and includes an instruction manual and book bag. Some scholarship funds are available. For the Chestertown class, call 410-778-7668, ext. 2175; for the Easton class, call 410-822-1000, ext. 5231.
