Celebrating Nurse Practitioner Week

National Nurse Practitioner Week was celebrated this year November 11-17 by the American Association of Nurse Practitioners. At UM Shore Regional Health, nine UM Community Medical Group NPs gathered on Monday, November 12 for a reception to celebrate the accomplishments of the previous year. The group was welcomed by Gail Shorter, chairperson of the Advanced Practice Provider Council, who expressed thanks to Timothy Shanahan, DO, Medical Director, UM CMG – Shore and Cheryl Ruff, UM CMG -Shore administrator, for their ongoing support of all providers.

In recognition of Nurse Practitioner Week, Maryland State (District 37) Senator Addie Eckardt honored the group with an official citation commending Shore Regional Health’s Advance Practice Provider Council. Senator Eckardt thanked all NPs for the “selfless and exceptional care they provide to our great community and State.” Ken Kozel, UM SRH president and CEO was present to congratulate nurse practitioners for their excellent clinical work as well as their increasing involvement within the Medical Staff.

What is a Nurse Practitioner (NP)? An NP is an advanced practice registered nurse who provides primary, acute or specialty health services. An NP must hold a master’s in nursing (MSN degree). This includes coursework in physiology, pharmacology, diagnosis and treatment as well as an additional 1000 clinical hours. Increasingly, NPs are obtaining a clinical doctorate of nursing practice (DNP) degree.

Qualifications and Licensing: To practice, NPs must be nationally board-certified in their specialty. NPs may also obtain sub-specialty certification. At UM Shore Regional Health, NPs are credentialed by the Medical Staff.  NPs are licensed in Maryland to practice independently under state rules and regulations; no oversight is required. New NPs are required to have a mentor for 18 months. In Maryland, all NPs have the credential CRNP (certified registered nurse practitioner).
