Celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month: A Message from Dr. King

UMMS Colleagues,

As we recognize Hispanic Heritage Month, celebrated each year from September 15 to October 15, the occasion brings to mind the words of Juan Felipe Herrera, our country’s first Latino poet laureate:

“My voice is made by everyone’s voices.”

It is precisely this dedication to championing the voices of all people, along with recognizing the humanity we all share, that our System’s Equity, Diversity and Inclusion (ED&I) efforts are all about. The more we treat others with respect and dignity, and the more we honor their unique histories, the better able we are to appreciate the journeys they have led and the rich cultures and traditions that have shaped them and their lived experiences.

Having this understanding at the core of what we do prepares us to provide the best possible care for our patients and communities. It also strengthens our culture of belonging and acceptance for all team members.

Sincerely,

Roderick K. King, MD, MPH
Senior Vice President
Chief Equity, Diversity and Inclusion Officer

Celebrations like Hispanic Heritage Month are an opportunity to pay tribute to the profound contributions Hispanic and Latino Americans have made to the fabric of our country, while expanding our knowledge of Hispanic and Latino culture and history. The Library of Congress, Smithsonian Institution, National Archives, National Gallery of Art, National Park Service and others have created a website featuring Hispanic Heritage Month resources and events. I encourage you to explore this website and others like it and to participate in any events celebrating Hispanic heritage of interest to you across your communities.

Thank you, UMMS team members, for your commitment to equity, diversity and inclusion. Our voice is made by your voices – and by the voices of everyone we serve – each and every day.
