Connecting with the Community at Kent County’s National Night Out

At the recent Kent County celebration of National Night Out, County Sheriff Dennis Hickman took advantage of free blood pressure screenings provided by Shore Community Outreach Team Nurse Coordinator Emily Welsh.

The Kent and Dorchester Shore Community Outreach Teams (SCOT) and Community Health Educator Sandy Wilson-Hypes participated in Kent County’s National Night Out (NNO) at Worton Regional Park, on Tuesday, August 6, 2024. NNO is an annual community-building campaign that promotes police-community partnerships and neighborhood camaraderie. SCOT members provided free blood pressure and diabetes screenings, while Wilson-Hypes offered non-certification CPR training. This is the second time SCOT attended the NNO to provide health screenings.

“We were pleased to again participate in the Kent County National Night Out,” said Emily Welsh, MSN, RN, Nurse Coordinator for the Kent County SCOT. “I had a great conversation with a community member we met two years ago at the event. He continues to experience elevated blood pressure but is now self-monitoring at home and regularly attending appointments with his primary care provider. We talked candidly about how soda can dramatically impact blood pressure and blood glucose, and about how setting surrounded realistic, attainable goals will provide positive impacts on his health.”
