Congratulations to the UM SRH Cancer Program team for their successful symposium, “Moving Forward #2024,” held on Saturday, March 16, 2024 at the Easton Fire Department.

With an audience of about 40 attendees, including survivors and a number of partners/caregivers, the event was provided at no charge and offered sessions on mindfulness and emotions, managing late effects of treatment (chemotherapy and radiation), palliative care, the importance of proper nutrition (with a cooking demonstration) and the importance of exercise (with a demonstration).

Breakout sessions, one each for men and women, focused on sex and cancer. Lunch also was provided.

Chef Jordan Lloyd provided a health cooking demonstration.

“We got a lot of positive response from the participants through a survey given out at the end of the event,” said Rochalla Jones, BSN, RN, Nurse Navigator for the Cancer Center. “Most comments indicated that the program met or exceeded their expectations, and many said, ‘keep doing this.’ All of us who worked on planning the event are pleased that those in attendance felt the information, strategies and resources shared during the program were helpful to them.”

Jones also noted that raffle prizes for the event were donated by Emily’s Produce, Cottingham Farms, Private Massage, and the YMCA. Also, two gas cards were donated as a raffle for the caregivers that were present with them.

Barb Jarrell, LIVEstrong instructor for YMCA of the Chesapeake led an exercise demonstration in which some attendees participated.

“This event exemplifies what makes our Cancer Program truly comprehensive,” said Jeanie Scott, Director, Oncology and Breast Health Services. “We support our patients all along their cancer journey, from diagnosis to survivorship, and make every effort to empower them with information and tools that help them maintain their best health during treatment and beyond.”

Going forward, Cancer Program team members look forward to offering more special events and opportunities that support cancer survivors on their wellness journey. Stay tuned!
