The American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) designates the third week of April as National Laboratory Services Week. Founded in 1922, the ASCP unites anatomic and clinical pathologists, residents and fellows, medical laboratory professionals, and students to advance laboratory medicine to better improve patient care through knowledge, collaboration and global community.
The American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) is the world’s largest professional membership organization for pathologists and laboratory professionals. With more than 100,000 members, the society’s influence has guided the application and evolution of the pathology and laboratory medicine specialty since 1922.
Laboratory professionals play a key role in patient care, both in the hospital and in the community. Shore Regional Health has five laboratories staffed by a total of 121 team members (including medical lab scientists, pathologists, phlebotomists, histotechs, cytotechs and support staff in Cambridge, Chestertown, Denton, Easton and Queenstown).
These labs are among the 260,000 labs nationwide that are certified by the Center for Disease Control’s Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments. In addition, Shore’s larger laboratories are accredited by the College of American Pathologists, a rigorous process that helps ensure the highest quality care is provided to Shore patients. In the U.S., more than 14 billion lab tests are ordered annually, with more than a million at Shore.
“The laboratory team at Shore celebrated Laboratory Professionals Week with continuing education, fun and food, said Juliana Hospodor, Director of Laboratory Services. “They are a terrific group and I am proud to be the director of such a fine team.”
