Congratulations to November’s DAISY nurse – Shannon Phoenix, BSN, RN, Staff Nurse at 2 East, who was nominated by her co-worker, Ashley Higgs, RN, for going above and beyond for an end-of-life patient.
“Shannon took the time to ask the patient if there was one last thing he’d like to be able to do,” the nomination read. “The patient replied that he would love to have one last dinner date with his wife. Shannon was determined to make his wish come true.”
After working a 12-hour shift, Phoenix organized the date – purchasing his wife’s favorite flowers (red roses), a dress shirt for the patient, and lunch from Olive Garden to be brought in the next day.
“He looked sharp in his button-down shirt and his hair was nicely combed,” wrote Higgs. “Battery-operated candles added to the ambience. Shannon made the patient’s wish come true!”
As part of winning the DAISY award, Phoenix will be nationally recognized on the DAISY website. She also received a certificate, a DAISY pin, and a “Healer’s Touch” Statue. As tradition holds, Phoenix and her team were also treated to cinnamon rolls.
