In late February, UM Shore Regional Health’s Medical Staff Quality Committee commended and thanked the Dorchester ED staff for the excellent care given to a patient who required an emergent bedside ventriculostomy. The patient, who received a CT brain scan upon arrival at the ED, needed the surgery immediately and his condition was too serious for him to survive transport out of the ED. UM Shore Regional Health’s neurosurgeon Khalid Kurtom, MD, was called at home, and he arranged for his surgical cart to be transported from Easton to UM SMC at Dorchester while he was on his way to the hospital. With the assistance of the ED team, he performed the life-saving surgery on site and the patient survived.
