The Dorchester General Hospital Auxiliary’s Nursing Grant Committee has awarded grants and scholarships to eight nursing students from Dorchester County. This year’s $1,000 scholarship award recipients are:  from North Dorchester High School, Lemya Julian Reeve; and from Cambridge South Dorchester High School, Areba Gull Ahmed. Nursing grant award recipients are Candice Lee Callahan, Ke’shyara, Janae Jolly, Katie Scarlett Lee, Haley Olivia Niblet, Kimberly Dawn O’Neill and Samantha Suzanne Wilson.
These awards help nursing students pay for tuition, books and other educational expenses.  To be eligible for the nursing grant, students must be enrolled in the nursing program at Chesapeake College or another accredited nursing program and maintain a 3.0 cumulative grade point average. Applicants may reapply each year.
Nursing grants and scholarships are funded by donations provided by members of the Auxiliary, community members, the Hospitality Shop located at UM Shore Medical Center at Dorchester and the Robin Hood Shop on High Street in Cambridge. Recipients are chosen by the Auxiliary’s Nursing Grants Committee, which includes Diane McCarthy, chair, Alexandria Anderson-Snell, Joy Carpenter, Nancy Duvall, Barbara Lipe and Kathy Potter.
“It’s always a pleasure to provide financial support to deserving individuals who are preparing for careers in nursing,” says McCarthy. “The Committee appreciates the donations to the Auxiliary and the hard work that our volunteers do in our two shops that make these grants and scholarships possible.”
